Could I Be Dehydrated & Not Even Know It?

Hi friends! It’s been awhile since my last post. It’s been a crazy ride these last few weeks with the kids starting school, me starting school, and finding, creating, and adhering to our new schedules! WHEW!

I am so excited and a little obsessed with what I am learning in the Holistic Health Coach Program with AFPA! I cannot wait to share a little of what I have been learning with you today!

Friends, this subject is an important one. So, listen up.

How much do you know about water? You probably can remember from health class that our bodies are made up of about 60%-70% water and we need it to survive. While this is true, there is so much more to water than we may realize.

Here are 5 Facts about Water:

FACT #1: WATER IS A GREAT CLEANSER.

“Water is a great cleanser—perhaps the best. Water is used as a healing agent for many problems, because a lack of water in our bodies can lead to many signs and symptoms of illness.”

“Water is needed to wash “toxins” from our cells and bodies. These include substances that are commonly consumed by many on a daily basis: caffeine, sugar, alcohol, nicotine, drugs of many kinds, background toxins like pesticide residues, air pollutants, electromagnetic pollution, and the endogenous substances made by a body under stress—the stress hormones.”

FACT #2: YOU CAN BE DEHYDRATED AND NOT BE THIRSTY.

I’ve always considered drinking water to nourish and hydrate your body was just common sense. However, what people fail to realize is how much water their bodies actually need. They say, “I drink when I’m thirsty.” But is that enough? Also—they usually fail to mention “what” they are drinking and their “what” usually isn’t water.

When a person becomes chronically dehydrated, they actually become less thirsty. Just like when a person is being constantly ignored they stop responding, the body stops responding as well. It actually stops telling us to drink more.

The good news is, as we increase our water consumption, our thirst returns.

FACT #3: IF YOUR URINE IS DARK YELLOW YOU ARE DEHYDRATED.

Our bodies give us a great indication as to the amount of water it needs—the color of our urine. When we increase our water intake our urine is more diluted and will be a very pale straw-color. Any color that is darker is a sign that your body needs more water. So, fill up your stainless steel water bottle and get guzzling, my friend!

FACT #4: EVERYTHING IN THE BODY MOVES ALONG WITH WATER.

“Everything in the body moves along with water. This includes nutrients absorbed in the gut, hormones, enzymes, nutrients, waste products, and any products of cellular metabolism, which move in and out of cells, in and out of the tissue fluid, and in and out of blood, lymph, or cerebrospinal fluid. Mucus, tears, sweat, sexual fluids, and many other bodily secretions are water-based.”

FACT #5: WE NORMALLY LOSE AROUND 2 LITERS OF WATER FROM THE BODY EVERY DAY.

“Just breathing, sweating, and producing the minimum amount of urine we need to keep our kidneys healthy, we normally lose around two liters of water from the body every day—much more if we are breastfeeding, menstruating, sweating profusely, vomiting, have excess mucus production, a fever, or diarrhea. An equal amount needs to be taken in to keep us in balance.

Friends, Acute and Chronic Dehydration can lead to a number of health problems and are oftentimes life-threatening. Take a look at the list of all of the health issues that not drinking enough water can cause:

Acute Dehydration

  • Dry Mouth

  • Being Tired

  • Lack of Energy

  • Decreased Urine Output

    • A dry diaper for more than 3 hours in a child

  • Dry Skin

  • Headaches

  • Dizziness

  • Dry Mucous Membranes

  • Muscle Cramps

  • Not Producing Tears When Crying

Chronic Dehydration

  • Poor Skin

  • Stomach Ulcers

  • Constipation

  • Muscles Pains

  • Cramps

  • Tightness

  • Joint Stiffness

  • Backache

  • Indigestion

  • Heartburn

  • Asthma

  • Depression

  • Chronic Fatigue

  • Water Retention (Edema)

  • Angina

  • High Blood Pressure

  • Low Energy

  • Fatigue

  • Chronic Inflammation Of All Kinds

  • Dementia

  • Cancer

I have to agree with what Dr. Batmanghelidj said, “You’re not sick; you’re thirsty!” I am coming to learn through AFPA’s Holistic Health Coach Program, that most health issues can be solved through proper nutrition, mental clarity, adequate exercise, and sleep.

Friends, we can choose to start our journey to better health by filling up our stainless steel cups with water instead of soda, juice, or coffee. If you wouldn’t water your garden with soda, juice, or coffee, then why would you nourish your body with them?
